Xushuai Zhang attended the XI Congress of Iberian Association for Comparative Endocrinology was organised in Vigo, Spain on July13th-15th, 2017. The program included 3 plenary lectures, 5 state of the art lectures, 28 oral communications and 32 poster communications.
Four awards were given for the best posters and talks (two for oral communications and two for posters). The prize-winners were PhD students, post-docs and early stage researchers. The prize-winners were selected by the scientific committee of the conference.
In his poster, Xushuai presented the results he obtained to test the hypothesis that the calcitonin system in mussels regulates calcium analogous to what occurs in mammals and proposed that it is also involved in biomineralization. For this reason, Xushuai targeted carbonic anhydrase (CAs) in the mussel and correlated the enzyme activity with expression of the calcitonin-GPCRs in the mantle. The results suggest a link between the calcitonin system and shell formation.
